About acumen

acumen Engineering/Analysis, Inc. is a small, woman-owned company which provides product design and engineering analysis services to Government and commercial organizations as well as product analysis for litigation support. The company, formed in August, 1990, is located in Fredericksburg, Virginia, approximately 50 miles south of Washington, DC.

The company's main business area is product design, testing and engineering analysis with emphasis on thermal systems, mechanisms and human factors. acumen 's staff has academic backgrounds in heat transfer and thermodynamics and extensive experience with medical and exercise equipment. Our program managers have directed projects ranging in size from thousands to millions of dollars both on a contract basis and as staff members of manufacturing and consulting organizations.

Product development efforts require a variety of technical skills as well as an ability to orchestrate diverse activities to achieve a desired goal. Our experience directing multidisciplinary design teams ranges from combustion products to medical equipment. Project teams routinely include both in-house and subcontracted skills.

acumen augments in-house technical skills, when necessary, by drawing on a network of individuals and companies with a broad range of skills including electronic and electromechanical product design, human factors, market analysis, and strategic planning. It includes manufacturers, independent consultants and academicians. Our teams routinely span large geographic areas. Through this network, we draw together project teams with skills tailored to meet the specific needs of each program.

We maintain a laboratory facility for prototype assembly and testing. Prototype hardware which is not fabricated in house is produced either by a manufacturer on the project team or by local job shops.

acumen maintains in-house or has access to a wide variety of analytical and design resources including ALGOR, PDEase and Aegis finite element analysis software and AutoCAD drawing tools. Engineering drawing, word processing, automated file management, automated project management, accounting and on-line data searches are conducted on Windows and Macintosh microcomputers. Automated data base searches for non-DOD documents are provided by the library at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville or the Library of Congress. DOD data bases may be accessed through the DTIC On-Line Service facilities.
